Spider Bin: A Universal and Economical Solution for Recycling

Transforming Plastic Bags into Aesthetically Pleasing Sorting Bins

Inspiring a Culture of Recycling and Sustainability

Lithuania currently recycles only 5% of its waste, with many people finding the process of sorting and recycling unappealing. Designer Urte Smitaite believes that recycling should be a source of pride and has created Spider Bin, a recyclable waste sorting system that aims to change people's perception of waste.

Spider Bin is a universal and economical solution for sorting recyclable materials. It consists of a group of pop-up sorting bins that can be used at home, in the office, or outdoors. The design is based on the idea of transforming the most popular recyclable waste container, the plastic bag, into a more aesthetically pleasing and functional solution.

One Spider Bin item consists of two basic parts: a frame and a bag. The frame is produced from HPL panels cut by a CNC machine, ensuring precision and efficiency. The bin is easily assembled and transformed into a pop-up bin, ready for use. Customers can choose from reusable fabric bags, non-reusable plastic bags, or bags with four sections, depending on their needs.

Spider Bin offers several unique features and strengths. It is easily moved from one place to another, making it convenient for users to transport and store. When not in use, it can be flattened, occupying minimal space. Customers have the flexibility to choose the size and number of Spider Bins according to their requirements.

Buyers can order Spider Bin online, selecting their preferred colors, sizes, and bag types. The product is then packed and sent to the customer. Upon arrival, the central joint of the frame needs to be fixed, transforming the bin into its "ready to use" position. The bag is then attached to the frame. Once the bag is filled, users can either remove the bag from the frame and place it in a public container or transport the entire Spider Bin to another location. After emptying, the bin can be flattened again for easy storage.

The Spider Bin project started in January 2015 in Vilnius and was completed in June 2015. It was exhibited at the Vilnius Academy of Arts Gallery as part of the YOUNG DESIGNER PRIZE EXHIBITION. The design received the Silver A' Design Award in 2016, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and contribution to sustainable products and green design.

Spider Bin is not only a practical solution for waste sorting but also a catalyst for change in recycling culture. By making recycling more accessible, aesthetically pleasing, and convenient, Spider Bin aims to inspire individuals to take pride in their role in creating a more sustainable future.
